Introspection on the Negative/Positive Effects of Digital Gaming
Through the changes in technology the gaming industry has risen to astounding creative abilities and capabilities that allowed a new social world and learning element through the growing computer/console gaming industry - in my own studies and insight I review the negative and positive effects of Digital gaming.
The Negative effects regarding digital gaming stems from games such as the controversial role-playing game called ‘Active shooter’ (which puts players as first-person gunman) this game provides the ability to freely use a gun and shoot people. This I fear has reached the youth in a way which normalizes and almost numbs those to the true cause and effects of the realities regarding violence. The types of digital games spans the world and allows freedom to engage in these activities that otherwise is illegal and morally wrong. In scope of gaming content- with a good storyline (ie Mass Effect or Star Wars) the shooting is balanced and justified by the story of good versus evil and balancing the world. Overall the gameplay is geared for fun but there is an imbalance of understanding the realities of digital gaming and to not act out on it in real life scenarios which has impacted situations such as school shootings. However, these games are within adult judgment and can be enjoyed without a person becoming in real life what they are playing/being in the digital realm.
In my fond memories of gaming I am reminded of the the positive effect of the digital gaming world and the varying genres of games out there - my favorite being the action/adventure point and click games. These were pc games (such as The Beast Within, Still Life, Kings Quest) that I played a lot in the 90’s and today that revolve around murder/mystery and adventuring through a story. These games are a platform of strategy, puzzles, and world/social discovery. I see how these games provide real benefits to playing digital games and how they impacted my own youth and learning. The social element allows you to decide the conversation and see the consequences, the investigative side is clicking on various artifacts and engaging with them to discover clues and insight on next part of game to follow and eventually solve/win the game. These games are part of what made me inspired and impassioned to become a journalist- to investigate the truth. The point and click adventure games are the ones I still play most which I look for a good storyline, character development, visually appealing graphics, and an investigative component to think, learn and strategize.
