Trump- Injecting Misinformation

With the White House Press Conference that took place on April 23, 2020, Donald Trumps' speech shocked many Politicians and Americans by encouraging the use of injecting disinfectants into the body as a solution/cure to COVID 19. Trump’s statement was inaccurately based off mentions by top health advisors’ studies regarding how bleach fights Covid. One speaker in particular- William Bryan (undersecretary for science and technology at the Department of Homeland Security) presented the idea of using disinfectants which Trump in turn declared on national television how health officials should study the injection of bleach and using disinfectants to treat COVID-19 in patients. Trump discusses (without accurate knowledge/information) how the disinfectant should somehow be injected into the body. This brought about a scandal regarding the Presidents mental/moral capabilities as well as the CDC’s competency in solving the crisis. This sewed seeds of doubt among Americans as this information was not only shocking but the concept is lethal to the body. This caused internal strife and discord within the White House and lead to the beginning of many political persons and Americans doubting Trumps Presidency.

Trumps statement then lead to some unsuccessful PR strategies one of them being Trumps’ attempt to clear the air by taking back his remarks about injecting humans with disinfectants and that he was using sarcasm get a point across to the reporters. It was too late -through the wildfire of news spreading on the internet and social media many posts were out there taking what he stated seriously and reaching out/asking officials at the White House coronavirus task force if it could be used in potential COVID cure. Some Americans took the statement to mean the President was recommending people inject themselves with bleach or isopropyl alcohol (ingredient in hand sanitizer). While others thought Trump meant something very different regarding how doctors could investigate using sunlight or disinfectants to clear COVID. Regardless, Trump’s remarks caused some companies and state agencies to issue warnings about ingesting disinfectants to keep naïve and gullible people from following his misinformation. The information provided by William Bryan was referring to the use of disinfectants on surfaces and in aerosols and Trump wrongfully reported the chemicals could be used in a potential COVID-19 treatment. Needless to say - the confusion over what Trump said during the briefing caused a PR nightmare in correcting the misleading information to the public as well as providing the correct information while the President ignorantly attempts to save face and warn Americans not to inject disinfectants.

  1. A severe travesty for all involved, indeed. Especially Dr. Debra Burks, whose career has forever been tarnished by DJTrump's misgivings. The job she wishes she had never taken! Another great post, thanks.
